Why I hate being cold

For the past couple of days, the weather in Cleveland has been pretty nice. It’s no longer hot and muggy, a sign that Fall is almost here, and now it’s cool and breezy. I usually love this time of year, mostly because I can finally sleep comfortably through the night because I’m not sweating through my clothes. So why am I complaining about the weather now, even though I said I usually love this kind of weather? That’s a very simple answer.

Ness loves fans

Well, let’s just say I’m very happy that our air conditioner broke, because I have a feeling that if it hadn’t, we’d still be using it in our room. Luckily for me, however, it remains broken (I keep saying I’m going to fix it, but now that it’s September, there’s no point in fixing it) and I remain a bit warmer because of it.

Have I mentioned that Ness loves fans? So much so that we have 3 fans in our bedroom. There’s a fan in the window, there’s a ceiling fan, and there’s an industrial fan that Ness likes to blow on the bed at night. On top of that, there’s a window above my head, and when the wind is blowing at night, I have absolutely no hope of getting warm enough to fall asleep.

The past couple of nights I’ve stayed up till 5AM hoping that a) I won’t have to get out from under the blankets to get more clothes or go to the bathroom because it’s so cold in our room that I don’t want to experience it for 2 minutes and b) I don’t even enough blankets or clothes on to get me warm enough to stop shivering so I can sleep. Last night I wore track pants, socks (I never wear socks to bed), a long sleeved t-shirt, and a hoody. I even went so far as to put the hoody hat over my head. Last night I also had one Spongebob fleece blanket, one comforter (all to myself) and one giant down comforter that Ness and I shared. I was still shivering.

I don’t think she understands how cold it is to me

Alright, now I don’t know why, but she is always warm. Her body temperature is high and no matter what, I feel like I’m an icicle when I touch her. We always joke that it’s because her people are from the sun (she’s a descendant of the Aztecs, aka she’s Mexican) and that I’m just a cold blooded freak. Well, I understand her obsession with air conditioners and fans.

Now…as for me…I’ve always had a relatively low body temperature. Seriously, touch me and you’ll shiver. At any given moment, my feet, my hands, or my ears will be ice cold. Sometimes this happens in 90 degree weather. People always ask me how I can wear jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt in the middle of summer; it’s because I’m not as hot as you think I am, and also because I’m probably kind of cold. This should be a good clue as to what three fans and an open window with a cool breeze would do to me.

I can’t sleep when I’m cold

No matter how many blankets or how many layers of clothing I have, if there’s one part of my body that’s cold, the rest of my body will be cold. I cannot sleep when I am cold. I cannot. I don’t like fans blowing on me, I don’t like having windows open if there’s going to be a cold breeze blowing through it, I don’t like being cold. I hate it. I also hate not getting any sleep. I have a feeling that I’m not going to get very much sleep until the coming Spring.

It’s kind of crazy how suddenly the weather in Cleveland got nice. It’s also getting dark a lot sooner. Seasons are pretty abrupt here.

I must be the opposite of you. In the summer time I blast the air and fans to keep the house extra cool, and pile on the blankets when I sleep. (Yes I know I am single handedly burning a giant hole into the ozone.) And in the winter I crank up the heat.

The clear answer here is you’re not cuddling close enough to each other while sleeping. ;-)

I know where you’re coming from though. I am a human space heater. I singlyhandedly warm small rooms. My girlfriend is always cold so I am in charge of keeping her warm. :)

Tell Ness to keep you warm. It if her job!

After growing up in Western, NY, abrupt seasons don’t bother me. When I was a kid, I used to hate it when you could tell summer was close to being over, but I loved it when you could tell summer was close. I was about ready for school to end.

In the winter I like to have a space heater around to keep me warm but I don’t turn it up that high. I can survive without fans and air conditioning in the summer.

Peroty, the problem is, I was cuddling with her, and she was trying to keep me warm, but it was so cold in the room, nothing was helping.

    I HAVE YOU BEAT.

My ex (this may partially be why he is my ex) was just like Ness, but only 400 million times worse. We slept with the window open (and by “open,” I do not mean “cracked,” I mean OPEN) in January. I wasn’t allowed to put the heat above 55F. And he had at least two fans aimed at the bed. This is STILL IN JANUARY.

    I rest my case.

(p.s. I really, really empathize with you.)

p.p.s. And let me just say that when the house heat is on 55F and the outside heat is on -100 million F, the mean temperature is somewhere in the realm of I Just Froze My Nipples Off. It was horrible.

Erin: That’s rough. My dad is like that with the heat in the winter though. I think last winter the highest we were allowed to put it at was 68F. I need to have a chat with Ness, because it’s too damn cold for me, and I’m still sick and I’m sure by not being able to sleep, I’m not helping it any.

umm mike and I are like that, but opposite. I am hot at all times. ALL THE TIME. No matter what. And he’s cold. So we, um, compromise. We keep it cold and he doesn’t have to hear me bitch. That’s why God made hoodies.

hehe if you’re cold I can keep you warm. You know, throw a blanket at you.

Mandy: Ah, the good old days with our inside jokes and all. Yea, I think I’m just going to let her have her fans for a bit. At least until it gets a bit colder. As long as I can go outside without a jacket still, we’ll be alright. But as soon as my hoodies come out, it’s over.

This problem is why dual control electric blankets were invented. One side can be completely ‘off’ and the other side can be on the highest setting possible. That way, two people are comfortable!

WOW! you are exactly like me..I cannot stand the fan in the summer blowing at my face. I cannot sleep if there is even a little breeze inside the room. Its nice to know someone who has the same problem as me (not that it is nice to have this kind of problem but atleast i am not alone lol)
