Frustrating customer service

I’ve been using Media Temple as my host for awhile now and I’ve been relatively happy so far. I don’t contact customer service often, because I stick to things I know. I don’t often venture out into unknown territory. Well, I’ve been gaining some skills and I wanted to try out something new. I wanted to start from the ground up and make my own little web app, and with a little help from Paul, I was able to do just that.

However, I encountered and error when trying to connect to the database and I searched on Google, on Php.net, on the MySQL page for an answer and I just couldn’t find one. So I contacted Media Temple, asking for their help. The first response I got from them asked me to send them links to my files that I was using for the app. Then, the second one pretty much said you did it wrong, try one of our one-press installs. I know I’m no genius when it comes to PHP, but if I were putting in the wrong database information, or if I had the file setup wrong, then it would have given me a completely different error.

If I wanted to use Drupal or WordPress, then I would have. I use Wordpress for pretty much everything, and it’s great, but it isn’t what I want for this. Drupal is just a pain in the ass. It’s slow and it’s too big. I wanted something nice and simple. But instead I get “And what about the same blog that you have setup already at jessanastasia.com?”. Argh.

I’ve overlooked the frequent database connection problems because I like Media Temple and it’s only a small annoyance. It only goes out for five to ten minutes and it doesn’t bother me. But to just tell me to try something else? I shouldn’t be so frustrated. But to just have someone tell me you set it up wrong, try one of our one click installs is just annoying.
